High School Excellence

Description:

This program is STEP 3 on our elite pathway and is centralized in Regina, SK. This program is designed to provide an increase in sport-specific training at the provincial level in preparation for the national level training center. This program has been recognized by Water Polo Canada and has been determined as a Regional Development Centre (RDC). Athletes selected to participate in this program are selected on an invitational basis; there are a maximum number of spots available, so a depth chart of athletes is additionally created by the WPS coaching staff to select athletes. These athletes will be eligible for Water Polo Canada's Age Group National Team programming (AGNT).

Objective:

These athletes will be provided with a training environment to best achieve their goals in high-performance sport. The privilege to be a part of this program will give athletes an opportunity to be one of those considered in a selection process to be a member of WPS provincial team in Water Polo Canada's 17U, 19U or Senior Leagues, in addition to any other Team Sask invitational tournaments. As an RDC, athletes in this program are eligible for age group National Teams.

Training:

This program offers an 3 additional high quality practices every week with Provincial Team Coaches. Additional Level 10 weight training session every week and optional add-on 2 sessions per week.

Eligible Events:

NCL 17U Events, 19U Events (National Provincial Championships, Alberta Open), Sr NCL Events

Selection Policy:

WPS goes through a separate selection process for each event. All HSE athletes are eligible to be selected to Team Sask travelling to each event.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions and protocols in place by the local facilities, our program planning and selection may be dictated by the ever-changing health status throughout the province and host cities. WPS staff retain the right to follow the selection policy criteria outlined in our website. Full policy is detailed here under Operational Policies; "National and Provincial Events".

Water Polo Saskatchewan Development Centre is NOT a substitution to your local club competitive program. This is an ADDITIONAL training service available for your child to complete your club's program and meet the Long Term Athlete Development requirements for the Competitive Stream.

Martin Collegiate

WPS has partnered with the Academy program at Martin Collegiate in Regina, SK, to allow student-athletes an appropriate balance between their education and their training schedules. Martin Collegiate allows each student-athlete to set up their course schedules each semester to fit the required courses for graduation throughout the full year period. Each student would receive a 'gap' in their f slot in order to attend water polo training at the Lawson each Monday, Wednesday, & Friday, and their weights & conditioning course on Tuesdays & Thursdays.

For those student-athletes that wish to attend a different high school other than the Martin Collegiate Academy, they may still participate in the High School Excellence training with WPS. The water training session remains the same at the Lawson, 12:15 PM to 1:45 PM, and the weights & conditioning sessions will be on Tuesdays & Thursdays from approximately 4-4:45 PM at the Level 10 Compound.

More about our Elite Athlete Pathway

The Development Centre (DC), High Performance Centre (HC) and the High School Excellence (HSE) are critical programs offered and run by Water Polo Saskatchewan as identification of our high performance athlete pathway.

Every year Water Polo Saskatchewan is evaluating its athletes using the operation policies you can find at http://www.wpsask.ca/about/policies/. Identified athletes are then invited to join the DC, HC or HSE. However any athlete who hasn't been invited at the beginning of the season can ask for a skills assessment in order to be accepted in the DC, HC or HSE program. The following document outlines the WPS programs and goals, as well as the tests performed for each level and the evaluation criterion.

 HSE Skill Assessment Template

*This test is not to be used later on for the Team Sask selection. Team selection will be done following WPS operation policies*.
